Welcome to our classroom website!

Welcome to
6th Grade
I am very excited for the new year we will be sharing together. I believe in working together to create a whole child in a fun and engaging environment. We have so much to do this year, and I hope all of you are looking forward to it as much as I am!
Bleau's News &
Announcements
Week of 5/21/18

It is our last week at NRE! We will be wrapping things up in math and reading, and practicing for Friday's graduation ceremony! It will be a fun week for all of us, I am sure!

Bleau Buck Sale

The culmination of our classroom banking for the year will be on Thursday, when student will have the chance to buy some fun stuff using the Bleau Bucks they have accumulated over the year. I could really use some parent help setting things up and running the store, if anyone has the time. I am looking to set things up at 12:30, during lunch, and have the actual sale from the end of lunch until about 1:50, and then clean up. If I can get 3-4 people to come in, it will be great. Please let me know if you can make it.

Graduation

We still have several slots that are not filled for bringing cookies for afterward, and for helping to set up beforehand!!

On the morning before graduation we have a lot to set up! We still need plenty of help setting up the chairs, risers, sign, and stage. Helping set up insures you are there early and can get seats up close. Please use the link below to sign up to help.
After graduation, the 6th grade has a brief gathering to say final goodbyes and pick up diplomas. This will happen in the gym. We are looking for volunteers to bring in cookies for this reception.

Christine Dennis and Kristen DeBeer are organizing a class picnic after the graduation ceremony at Northridge Park, weather permitting.

Bring:

  • lunch

  • water

  • sunscreen

  • lawn chairs or blankets

  • lawn games/activities for the kids

We will meet up there after the graduation reception, so we can all spend time together while the kids run around for a few final hours!

The 6th grade Discovery students have also traditionally had a poetry night that week, at the Starbucks at Town Center. That will take place Thursday, May 24, 6:30-8:00 p.m., the evening before the graduation.

Mr. Bleau news

I wanted to make sure that you all knew that I will not be coming back to Northridge next year. I have decided to take a position at Creighton Middle School in Jefferson County, teaching 6th grade math and science in their GT Center. Of course, this does not affect the 6th graders who are moving on, but I wanted you to know what was going on. I have really enjoyed my time in Discovery, and will miss the students and families that are a part of this amazing Discovery community. Thank you for your support this year, and good luck in the future!

Brown Bag Enrichment

Our last Brown Bag Enrichment of the year was Friday, with Deanna Casey, a District Manager for Starbucks. Lots of kids attended and brought up great ideas and questions! I hope that the students enjoyed the opportunities we had for some interesting learning throughout the year! Thank you to everyone who gave their time to make this program a success this year!

Science

5th grade has been busy researching and creating models of sustainable homes. They are to be created using materials that the students find, not buy. The houses should be completed and ready to share with the class on Tuesday, 5/22.

Reading - 6th grade

Students will be sharing the dystopian societies they have created.

Reading - 5th grade

We will finish sharing our fantasy story ideas.

Middle School opportunities:

“New Beginnings”- The transition to middle school can be overwhelming, yet exciting for most students and parents. Mountain Ridge wants to support your student with this new transition. This three-day class is designed to ensure a positive transition experience by providing strategies for student success in middle school. Students will understand the school culture and expectations, meeting MRMS staff and new friends, learning organizational techniques, managing daily schedules, navigating the building, using a PE locker, understanding behavior expectations and much more. We will take the first 200 registered students for each session. Registration will be closed after the limit has been reached.

Dates are- July 25th, 26th, and 27th   8-:00-11:00am and 12:00-3:00pm

While you may contact me through this website, it is not always the quickest way to get to me. You might prefer to email me through my direct email at: cbleau@dcsdk12.org.

GT Support

A SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted) Parent Group is forming this October. This interactive 8-week parent discussion group meets once a week and discusses key issues related to giftedness and real-world, research-based parenting strategies to help you address these issues in your family. Plus it's a great place to learn about local resources and learn from fellow parents who are facing similar challenges (without judgement!).

Self-Reliance and Advocacy

During 6th grade, one of our main areas of focus will be self-reliance and advocacy. It is a good idea for the kids to start to learn to speak up for their educational needs during this year, before heading off to middle school next year, when the skill will be essential. For that reason, my preference is to try to work through situations with the students as much as possible. If they are having a hard time understanding something in class, or feel that there is any issue which is keeping them from being their best at school, I would like to hear from them. Please encourage your child to feel free to email me, hand me a note at school, or just come up and ask to talk. I will always find the time to listen, and do what I can. If there are serious issues, we will, naturally, include the parent or administration, but learning how to respectfully communicate with people in authority will be a great asset for these growing young students.

Online ordering from Scholastic Books is now available! To reach our classroom website for ordering, simply click on the link to the right, below the calendar information. You can also simply go to the Scholastic site and enter our group code (MCL2V). Our classroom will earn points toward increasing our room library when you order either through the website, or send orders in with your student.
